Demi Lovato may be single, but she is not ready to mingle! Over the past two years, the 20-year-old pop star has been open about her struggles with eating disorders and mental health issues. And though she says it’s been “smooth sailing” lately, she’s still too focused on her health to worry about dating. “It doesn’t matter how frickin’ good-looking you are, or funny, or how in love with them I am,” she tells iVillage exclusively. “Right now, there’s nobody more important to me than myself and my recovery.” But just because she’s not going on dates doesn’t mean she’s not keeping busy. Lovato has a new seat on the X Factor judging panel, and she’s also a mentor for the Acuvue 1-Day Contest. When iVillage caught up with her, she dished about what it’s like to mentor young girls, why she doesn’t feel pressure to be a role model and what it’s really like to work with Britney Spears.
Why did you want to be a mentor for the Acuvue 1-Day Contest?
I wanted to be a mentor because it’s a great opportunity to help someone come out of their shell and make them feel more confident and comfortable with going after their dreams. It was a great opportunity to give back. I had a lot of fun doing it.
So many young girls look up to you. Does that ever feel like a lot of pressure?
It used to feel like a lot of pressure because I wasn’t really honest with everyone. I feel like it’s not a lot of pressure when you’re just being yourself and you’re telling the truth about things. I had issues that I was dealing with in privacy, and I was doing things that normal teenagers go through. But I definitely didn’t feel like a role model at the time. Now that I’ve talked about the issues that I’ve dealt with, I feel that I’ve been very honest and open. When people still call me an inspiration after that, I don’t feel pressured at all. I really am just being myself with everyone, and when people accept me for who I am, it feels really, really great.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned in the past four-plus years while observing the neverending shuffles of judges on shows like American Idol, X Factor and The Voice, it’s that singing competitions make for strange bedfellows. Take, for example, the latest news to come out of the Fox fortress: X Factor’s Demi Lovato is being paired up with fellow teen star Nick Jonas for the judges’ house portion of the show, THR has learned. This is the part of the competition where final cuts are made and the Top 16 acts are revealed — four for each judge (last year, show creator Simon Cowell made a fifth pick in Melanie Amaro, who eventually won the competition).
In an X Factor twist, each judge is given a group to mentor. Season two’s split has yet to be revealed, but several sites are reporting that the breakdown will look like this: Lovato will take on solo singers ages 12 to 16, Britney Spears will mentor singers 17 to 24, L.A. Reid will handle ages 25 and over and Cowell will guide the groups (a show rep tells THR that there have been changes to the divisions but wouldn’t confirm any details).
Meanwhile, the Lovato-Jonas connection is a deep and long-lasting one. Not only did the 20-year-old singer get her break with the lead role in the Jonas Brothers 2008 movie Camp Rock, but she’s also toured with the group extensively and dated Joe Jonas for a stint. For his part, Nick Jonas has been actively campaigning for the judge’s seat on Fox’s other singing show, American Idol, tweeting that “it would be a dream come true.” While appearing on X Factor could give network brass an opportunity to see him doling out criticism on-air, it could just as easily dissuade them.
We’ll know soon enough as Idol auditions in front of the judges typically start in late September. X Factor season 2 is set to premiere on Sept. 12.

Awww, Demi-licious! Apparently when Demi Lovato was first offered the X Factor judging gig, she sh-sh-shook in her high-heeled boots! The former Disney Princess recently dished:
“I really feel like being the first young judge on any of these vocal competition shows is a lot of pressure, but at the same time, it’s great because I get to bring in a perspective from the audience that’s around my age. I was nervous at first because it’s not like I have the experience that L.A., Simon and Britney have…”
But thank goodness she got all those butterflies out of her system and can rep the youth demo like the pro-fresh she is! Demi also recently expressed how she now believes she’s a perfect fit for Simon Cowell’s newly revamped X Factor. Demi shares:
“I know how hard people have to work to get to where they want to be, and I can spot somebody who has talent and who’s memorable and could be a pop star.”
Oh honey, we couldn’t agree more! And we couldn’t imagine ANYONE ELSE we’d rather see nestled in between Britney Spears, L.A. Reid, and Simon! Too amped for X FACTOR!! Must. Calm. Down.

The judges have reason to celebrate now that they’re finding their groove following a tumultuous off season. After winner Melanie Amaro was crowned last December, Cowell canned judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, as well as host Steve Jones. With the additions of Lovato and Spears, Cowell is emphasizing a more youthful tone, made most evident by changing last year’s over-thirties category to singers 25 and up, to compete with the groups and two more categories still to be determined. “We have to make this event television,” insists Cowell as the quartet gather backstage to discuss the show’s new faces, format changes and their heavyweight competition this fall.
TV Guide Magazine: What was missing last season that you’ve fixed with this new panel?
Cowell: I think there was too much history with me and Paula. I adore her…but it just felt like that relationship was too steeped in American Idol history. With these shows, you can never be complacent. Whenever we choose a panel, you’ve got to be interesting and you’ve got to know what a star is.
Reid: I think Simon really nailed it. In the time that I’ve spent with both Britney and Demi, I’m impressed with their ability to really identify greatness and talent.
TV Guide Magazine: Britney, what was your reaction when Simon offered you the job?
Spears: He was absolutely adorable on the phone, and he is so sweet. My makeup artist used to do his makeup, and we were joking around about me doing it. So I guess it was one of those meant-to-be things.
TV Guide Magazine: And Demi, what was behind your decision to join?
Lovato: I really feel like being the first young judge on any of these vocal competition shows is a lot of pressure, but at the same time, it’s great because I get to bring in a perspective from the audience that’s around my age. I was nervous at first because it’s not like I have the experience that L.A., Simon and Britney have. But I know how hard people have to work to get to where they want to be, and I can spot somebody who has talent and who’s memorable and could be a pop star.
