It might be losing ground on the iTunes single sales chart, but when it comes to radio, Demi Lovato’s latest single is burning up like “Neon Lights.”

“Neon Lights,” the third single from her “DEMI” album, officially crossed into the top ten at Top 40 radio this week. According to Mediabase, it was the ninth most spun song for the period between March 13 and March 19.

It was previously positioned at number twelve.

From a field of former Disney teen stars — think Selena, Miley, plus their older pop sisters Britney and Christina — Demi Lovato, 21, is one of the most relatable. In 2010, she entered a treatment facility to deal with issues of depression, bulimia, addiction, and cutting, and she’s been equally forthright about her subsequent journey to health. Now, the youngest X Factor judge has a new self-titled album that documents that journey. We caught up with her in between tour dates — and after surgery to have her tonsils removed — to ask how she’s feeling, emotionally and physically, in the months after her father’s sudden passing.

How did your throat surgery go? And how soon until we hear your voice again?
It was tough, but I’m feeling so much better now. I felt like I had a terrible sore throat for at least 2 weeks. I was really nervous before the surgery: I asked the doctor if he’d ever had anyone die from anesthesia before. (In case you’re wondering, he said, “No.”) I’m going to be singing again very soon!

Did this surgery offer a permanent remedy?
I had enlarged and impacted tonsils, so I’ve been dealing with chronic tonsillitis for as long as I can remember. I’d get sick every couple of weeks. Awful! I was supposed to get my tonsils out when I was 15, but my schedule was [too] crazy. Now that my tonsils are removed, I should be good.

First thing’s first: [said in a Seinfeld voice] What’s the deal with pop starlets filming videos in old, abandoned, dust-covered mansions? Did Demi Lovato film her “Let It Go” video in the exact same location as Chavril? (Whose song has a very similar title? #Synchronicity) Was she hiding in the attic? Was she the ghost in the attic? ANYWAY. Now that we got that rant out of the way, let’s focus on Demi’s just-released “Let It Go” video which is a.) intercut with uplifting scenes from Disney’s forthcoming “Frozen” movie, b.) a visual delight with Demi singing her song in a cool Gothic-inspired gown, and c.) full of important life lessons. I mean, of COURSE it is! It’s part of a Disney movie! So, without any further ado, let’s discuss everything we’ve learned from Demi’s “Let It Go” video.

You Can Run, But You Can’t Hide. This is one artist who has struggled through and surpassed expectations of your average Disney star. But amidst her growth, she remembered her roots enough to return for a collaboration. I was so convinced Demi Lovato had left her sickly sweet Disney image in the dust, that when I heard she recorded “Let It Go” for some movie Frozen, I thought — did Madonna make a movie off her famous single? Yeah, insanely off. Because I know you are far more hip than me, you may have already known Frozen is the next big Disney venture coming to a theater near you. It features a optimistic young girl who engages in a tireless search of her sister while enduring blistering conditions. While animated 3D movies may make you queasy, or are altogether not your thing, the single Lovato’s debuted surely will be. It’s got an equally optimistic message that has become a permanent sidekick to Disney movie plots: to rise from adversity and prove your worth regardless of any setback. This song seeks to release you from what others think of you and any limitations that have been placed on you.

Lovato has struggled through her career with what Disney stars always fight against: breaking free from the Disney image, and fitting into the competitive music world. It’s fair to say she’s assimilated just fine, but Lovato doesn’t take too many risks in terms of straying away from pop music. But it’s not broken, so who are we to tell her to fix it?

“Let It Go” slips perfectly into the lap of a Disney soundtrack. Her pulsating recital of the title builds to a bright, meadow-y explosion of positivity. But even if you were to hear it, not knowing of its point of origin or inspiration, you would still note a familiar theatrical delivery (remember Christina Aguilera’s “Reflection” for Mulan?).
Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine have a “thing?!” >>

Outside of this track, it’s worthy to establish that Lovato’s music is always heartfelt, honest and powerful. She’s a stellar role model, with grace and sass that we all have been charmed by while watching her on hit show, The X Factor. So It’s OK if she backtracks her tremendous progress just this once, to pay respect to the dynasty that made her who she is.

Demi Lovato is gearing up to hit the road for her 2014 Neon Lights Tour, and she’s bringing along a little “X Factor” help. The girls of Fifth Harmony, along with “X Factor” U.K. contestant Cher Lloyd and season eight winners, girl group Little Mix, will be Lovato’s opening acts.During “Live From MTV” with Fifth Harmony, where they performed two songs including “Miss Movin’ On,” the fivesome — Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane Hansen, Camila Cabello and Lauren Jauregui — said they’re “super-excited” to hit the road and believe Demi may have hinted at the tour invitation a few months ago when she sent a cryptic text.

“She said we should perform a Spice Girls song,” Camilla said. “And we were like, where are we going to perform it? She said at a concert. What concert?” Lauren added.

Well, it seems they will get that opportunity when the tour kicks off on February 9 in Vancouver, Canada, before making stops in Atlanta, New Jersey, and Toronto and wrapping up March 30 in Indianapolis. Yet the girls, who are preparing for the road trip with their own headlining tour, which kicks off Friday (October 25) in Boston, Massachusetts, admit they haven’t talked to Demi about any of the tour logistics as of yet, or even their new EP Better Together, since they have much more humorous things to discuss.

“We haven’t talked about the EP, but I did send her this GIF on Tumblr once. It was one where she was [dancing],” Camilla said before demonstrating the dance move. “And the Tumblr caption was, ‘When you fart in class and nobody hears,’ and then I texted it to her and I was like “LOL” and she was like “LOL.”

OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder has praised Demi Lovato, describing her as “crazy talented”. The frontman – who worked with Lovato on her most recent LP – hailed the X Factor USA judge’s vocal range on her new single ‘Neon Lights’. Speaking about Lovato, he told Capital FM:

“She’s a little popstar, isn’t she? She’s a crazy talented singer. “I don’t produce a lot of dance music, and so that record ‘Neon Lights’ we did intentionally because I wanted to.”

Lovato will release ‘Neon Lights’ as the third cut from her LP, which has spawned hits ‘Heart Attack’ and ‘Made in the USA’ since its release earlier this year.

“She came in and just ripped it,” he recalled. “She, in pop music, has one of the biggest ranges, possibly the highest full-voice singer [that] I’ve ever worked with. She can belt full voice like three octaves above middle C, it’s just crazy, practically off the piano, how high she can go,” the ‘Counting Stars’ singer explained. “And [she has] complete power and complete control. “At the beginning she’s singing the lowest note she’s ever done, and by the end she’s going as high as she’s ever gone.

Tedder added: “It’s a fun dance record.”

Lovato will begin her North American ‘Neon Lights’ tour next year, with support from Cher Lloyd, Little Mix and Fifth Harmony.
