A few nights before, Selena Gomez was on hand to accept an award at the unite4:humanity Gala and gave a big shout out to BFF Demi Lovato:

“I’m truly honored to be in a room with such incredible people that inspire me. I want to thank my family. They are the ones who taught me the importance of giving back before we had anything to give back… I have to say, I want to thank Demi,” Selena shared during her acceptance speech. Selena continued, “Just the fact that we’re here at 21 years old, and we’ve always talked about using our voice to help this generation… I feel like sometimes we’re the only ones holding the fort, and I’m so thankful for you to inspire me everyday. I hope that we can, together, completely inspire this generation to focus on what’s really important. So thank you so much.”

Anyone who’s seen Demi Lovato perform live knows that the girl can sing, but the exiting “X Factor” judge is prepping to bring a little more sparkle to her forthcoming Neon Lights Tour.

“You can expect a show that I’ve never put on before,” the blue-haired singer told MTV News following Thursday’s “X Factor” finale, which saw real-life couple Alex & Sierra take home the grand prize. “I’m really excited.”

While Lovato says that her previous shows have been “all about the music,” the 21-year-old hopes to give fans an “incredible experience” with her latest.

“I want it to be about girl empowerment,” she said. “I want it to be a huge party.” Um, who wouldn’t want to party with “X Factor” alums (and tour openers) Cher Lloyd, Little Mix and Fifth Harmony? Count us in!

After listening to Demi non-stop since May, Lovatics are itching to know the latest on the star’s next musical offering. Rest assured that the “Heart Attack” singer has already started scheduling recording sessions for “in between breaks” of the tour and she plans to be “writing every chance I get.” Demi features a memorable collaboration with Lloyd (“Really Don’t Care”), but can we expect to see Fifth Harmony making sweet music with Lovato anytime soon?

“Of course! There’s plans to collaborate with them,” Lovato gushed. “I adore them so much. They’re such sweet girls and I really think they’re going to go far in this industry. I’m glad I could that I could be a part of it by helping put them together and taking them on the road. It’s really exciting.”

Alas, all this touring leaves little time for Lovato’s TV gig. The singer confirmed last week that she won’t be returning to “X Factor” for season four.

From a field of former Disney teen stars — think Selena, Miley, plus their older pop sisters Britney and Christina — Demi Lovato, 21, is one of the most relatable. In 2010, she entered a treatment facility to deal with issues of depression, bulimia, addiction, and cutting, and she’s been equally forthright about her subsequent journey to health. Now, the youngest X Factor judge has a new self-titled album that documents that journey. We caught up with her in between tour dates — and after surgery to have her tonsils removed — to ask how she’s feeling, emotionally and physically, in the months after her father’s sudden passing.

How did your throat surgery go? And how soon until we hear your voice again?
It was tough, but I’m feeling so much better now. I felt like I had a terrible sore throat for at least 2 weeks. I was really nervous before the surgery: I asked the doctor if he’d ever had anyone die from anesthesia before. (In case you’re wondering, he said, “No.”) I’m going to be singing again very soon!

Did this surgery offer a permanent remedy?
I had enlarged and impacted tonsils, so I’ve been dealing with chronic tonsillitis for as long as I can remember. I’d get sick every couple of weeks. Awful! I was supposed to get my tonsils out when I was 15, but my schedule was [too] crazy. Now that my tonsils are removed, I should be good.

Demi Lovato spoke with Miami’s Y100 radio backstage at Jingle Ball 2013 on Friday (Dec. 20) and was forced to answer a very “naughty” question. The 21-year-old picked a question out of the Santa hat that read:

“You were picked to give one celebrity plastic surgery. Who would it be and what type of surgery?” Though she first refused to answer, saying, “I shouldn’t even think this,” Lovato then jokingly replied: “It should be me! I should get a boob job. They’re like mosquito bites.”

All jokes aside, in September of 2012, Lovato revealed to Katie Couric that she has been struggling with body image issues from a very young age. “When I started having body image issues I remember being three years old in a diaper and rubbing my hand over my stomach … and I remember thinking in my head ‘I wonder if one day this will ever be flat?’” she said. The “Heart Attack” singer has since become a role model for teens and young girls who struggle with bullying and self-esteem issues.

We think you’re gorgeous, Demi!

In a new interview, Demi throws some major loving Taylor’s way–refreshing, given that pop stars are generally rumored to be throwing shade at one another. Demi talked with Entertainment Weekly recently, where she was asked if she thought not singing about drinking and clubbing would hurt her career. Her answer had a tie-in with the work Taylor’s doing, as she explained,

“I don’t really care because those things don’t apply to my life at all. A good example of that is Taylor Swift. We’ve had conversations about this where I’m like, ‘I have so much respect for you as an artist because you don’t have to write about that stuff.’” Demi continued, “She’s like, ‘Well, I don’t go out.’ I don’t go out to clubs and I don’t party and to me, it says more when you don’t have to do things for shock value. You’re more respected as an artist. And that’s what I want to be, I want to be respected as an artist and not a tabloid headline.”

Before you think she’s making a statement about Miley Cyrus, back it up…she said of Miley:

“I’m in no position to give people advice on their careers. She’s having fun and figuring out who she is, and this is the age when that happens. I think that…[long pause and a smile] she’s doing her own thing. Good for her.”

Always keeping it classy, Demi.

During a recent radio interview for Boston’s Jingle Ball, Selena talked about Demi, explaining, “I think what people forget is that she’s actually been there for me, too. I’ve known her since…we were best friends since we were 7.”

She continued, “We had a time where we did grow apart, but there’s not a single person on this planet that knows me like she does.”

Selena and Demi have history, as Sel explained, “She goes into my darkest place, and she goes into my lightest most incredible memories. There’s nothing like her and there’s nothing like us, so I will always cherish her…she’s like my sister. I’m very, very proud of her.”

In 2010, former Disney star and current X Factor judge Demi Lovato hit bottom. Now 21, Lovato makes good use of the struggles she experienced in her new book Staying Strong, a book of daily inspirational thoughts. Lovato stopped by the EW offices to give a no-holds-barred interview about her book, Taylor Swift, and the advice she’d give Miley Cyrus.

A lot of your peers like to say, ”I’m not a role model.” But with a book of advice like this, you’re saying the opposite.
I used to say that too. That was my excuse to do whatever the f— I wanted and not give a s— about what other people thought. Then I ended up going through some stuff. I realized I’m never going to escape the fact that I’m in the public eye, so I might as well do the best I can.

You’ve been quite open about your personal struggles ever since they came to light.
When I went to rehab, I was still on the Disney Channel — I think I might be the first person who can say that! [Laughs] It wasn’t like I could discreetly make the choice to go into treatment. My actions were very public. My manager told me, “You can decide not to talk about anything, or you can be completely honest.” Now, at night, I can rest on my pillow easy because there’s nothing I’m hiding.

Demi Lovato knows that the price of fame is little to no privacy, and she’s OK with that as long as it helps her fans. The 21-year-old singer admits that sometimes being in the spotlight can have it’s downside, but explains to E! News during her book signing for Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year in Los Angeles over the weekend that being able to inspire and help so many people makes it worth it.

“Yeah it’s been difficult,” Lovato says of walking the fine line between wanting privacy but also wanting to be there for her fans. “I’m not the type of person that loves the fame aspect of it. I would rather sacrifice my privacy to help people, not just with my music. Strictly from this point of view, from an inspirational point of view of sharing my story. I know that I have a purpose in the world.”

Demi Lovato has a hit album and not one, but two impressive TV gigs thanks to “The X Factor” and “Glee,” but the pop singer remembers how close she thought she was to losing it all.

“When I was in treatment, I honestly thought my career was over,” Lovato, 21, told Entertainment Weekly of her struggles, for which she entered a treatment facility in 2010. “But when I came out of treatment, I had more supportive fans than ever.”

Although Lovato says she used to be one of the many celebrities, especially younger celebrities, that tried to avoid becoming a role model to their fans, she quickly learned it would not be so easy to avoid facing the consequences of her actions.

“I used to say that too,” she said. “That was my excuse to do whatever the f–k I wanted and not give a sh-t about what other people thought. Then I ended up going through some stuff. I realized I’m never going to escape the fact that I’m in the public eye, so I might as well do the best I can.”

Demi Lovato has a long history with the Jonas Brothers. And when the group announced they had officially disbanded last month, the X Factor judge was just as taken aback as everyone else.

“I think everyone was surprised,” the singer-songwriter told E! News, following the double elimination on the X Factor on Thursday, Nov. 14. “I don’t think anyone was expecting it but they’re off doing their own things and they’re happy and I support them.”

The 21-year-old star also said that she keeps in contact with Kevin Jonas, Joe Jonas and Nick Jonas.

“They’re brothers to me and I’ve gone through so much with them,” the blue-haired Texan revealed.
